Customer: Alex Edwards, Barnstaple
We recently completed a lovely transformation project in a small rear courtyard garden at a terraced house in Barnstaple. When our manager, Adam, went to visit the property to provide a quote for the works, the customer advised that they wanted the area to be completely gutted and utilised into a space that they could enjoy and make use of. During the quote consultation it was noted that, although removing waste from sites is part of the service we offer, it wasn’t going to be straight forward for this project because, as with many townhouses, access was problematic.
Any waste being removed and any materials being brought in were going to have to go straight through the house from door to door. It also meant that the team of landscapers potentially working on this project weren’t going to have the option to use one of our mini diggers and everything was going to have to be dug by hand and wheelbarrowed out. With this in mind it was decided that we should quote to install a raised bed with sleeper walls that would not only look good but also meant that the unwanted soil and ground waste could be reused to fill the bed rather than be removed in wheelbarrows through the house!
After getting the go ahead from the customer, we arranged a convenient start date and a small team of our landscapers were assigned to the project. They firstly had to clear the courtyard area, which included dismantling an old garden shed and removing it along with any other rubbish. Trees and their roots were dug out, stone walls were taken down, and the waste materials carried by hand to the front of the property and loaded for removal.
The customer intended to replace the garden shed, so we dug out an area and installed a concrete base in the chosen position. Sleepers were carried in through the house and secured appropriately to construct the raised bed, which was filled with the wasted soil as planned. The rest of the courtyard area was then leveled and the materials needed to install the surface were again carried by hand through the house. Weed membrane was laid and covered with Cotswold Buff chippings as chosen by the customer, providing a clean and low maintenance finish.
So while it was a little more disruptive for the customer than we would prefer, the end result made it all worthwhile! A previously unused and dated space utilised and transformed into a contemporary courtyard garden, another happy customer!
“I’m thrilled with the work that Groundforce has done in our courtyard garden, thanks to them the space has been completely transformed. The team were really friendly and hard working, and had the job finished in good time while taking great care along the way. Thank you Groundforce!”
